What is DuraCoat?
DuraCoat is a two part polymer coating. Unlike other firearm finishes, DuraCoat was created specifically for firearms. Other firearm finishes are "spin-offs" from other industries.
Will DuraCoat withstand a salty environment?
Yes. DuraCoat is well suited to salty environments. DuraCoat has passed the 300 hour salt spray test, which far exceeds military requirements for firearm finishes. A firearm coated with DuraCoat simply will not rust...EVER!
Why do other firearm finish manufacturers boast hardness, but make no mention of elasticity?
In the case of firearm finishes, a common misconception is "harder is better". This is faulty "old school" thinking. Hardness means brittle, brittle means chipping. Duracoat, being elastic, will not chip. If your DuraCoat chips, it means you have a preparation problem. Most likely, the surface was not clean. Elasticity provides protection by "giving" when confronted with impact. DuraCoat cures slowly so it remains flexible after it cures which contributes to its excellent abrasion and wear resistance. DuraCoat doesn't wear out, it wears in.
How durable is DuraCoat?
DuraCoat is permanent. With normal use, a firearm finished with DuraCoat will last several lifetimes. It resists 100 inch pounds of direct impact and 80 inch pounds in reverse impact. It's pencil hardness runs H to 2H.
Can I use my gun right away after I get it back?
We strongly urge you not to use your firearm immediately. Please allow at least two full weeks after you get your firearm back to let the DuraCoat finish fully cure and harden. It takes 3-6 weeks from the day the weapon is re-finished for DuraCoat to fully cure.
Is DuraCoat easily removed?
No. The elastic nature of DuraCoat resists blasting. A qualified individual, with the proper blast media, can safely remove DuraCoat without damaging the surface of the firearm.
In most cases, we recommend lightly blasting the surface, being cautious not to remove anyof the DuraCoat. Just "beat up" the DuraCoat giving it "tooth" so your new application of DuraCoat has something to adhere to.
Can DuraCoat be applied to wood surfaces?
Yes, DuraCoat may be applied to metal, plastic, or wood. As with all surfaces, it must be properly prepared prior to application.
Do I have to choose colors from existing schemes?
No. Any combination of colors may be chosen based on your individual preference.
When might DuraHeat be used?
DuraHeat is available for parts exposed to extreme tempertaures. This coating can withstand temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees F. This coating is available in a limited range of colors (matte black, HK black, woodland brown, woodland green woodland tan, stainless, and pewter).
Will DuraCoat burn off my barrel?
DuraCoat can withstand temperatures as high as 500-600 degrees F. With "normal" shooting your barrel will never come close to being that hot. If you are fortunate enough to own a transferable machine gun, or if you like to "blaze" with your semi-auto, do not put DuraCoat on your barrel, as your barrel tempertaure rises over 1,000 degrees F. In those cases, use DuraHeat (see above).
